Memory Foam Mattress: Pros and Cons
Developed by NASA, memory foam (or "viscoelastic" polyurethane foam) became available to the public in 1991 when the first memory foam mattress was presented to the world. The memory foam mattresses became very popular among those who had sleep problems and wanted to relieve aching joints and back pain.
The ability of memory foam to remember the position of your body for a few seconds helps ease the pressure points and aching joints. However, memory foam mattresses may not be ideal for everyone. They also have their pros and cons.
Advantages of memory foam mattresses:- They can reduce painful pressure by distributing body weight evenly and supporting your body at the same time.
- They are likely to reduce tossing and turning at night.
- Since memory foam causes less pressure to painful points in the body, it can accelerate the healing process.
- Memory foam can be hypoallergenic because of its dense structure.
Disadvantages of memory foam mattresses:
- They can feel hot at night as they keep the heat of your body, which can be uncomfortable for some owners. However, some memory foam mattresses now have a cooling system.
- They may produce a chemical-like smell, which can be irritating to some sleepers but absolutely harmless. The distinctive smell can sometimes last for several weeks or just a few days. However, you now can find memory foam mattresses that contain less harsh chemicals.
- Some people note a quicksand effect. They complain that they feel like they're sinking into their bed. While some people find it comfortable to "sink" into bed, others find it constricting.
